Historicon
This last weekend in the heat of northern Virginia, the Battlespace Publishing team visited Historicon and hosted a game of Metaverse. This was the biggest public display of Metaverse yet and was a resounding success. The scenario involved six players on two sides commanding a mixed Star Trek and Star Wars force. On one side of the table sat a combined task force of Empire and Dominion. Opposite this odd mixup was a force of Starfleet and Rebel Alliance.
The Good Guys force was divided into three groups to be commanded. The first group consisted of an Excelsior Cruiser, a Nebulon B Frigate, a DP20 Corvette, X-Wings, and Y-Wings. The second group consisted of a Neutron Star Cruiser, a Miranda Destroyer, Z-95 Headhunters, R-41 Starchasers, and Y-Wings. The third group was a solitary Nebula Cruiser with a torpedo pod.
The Bad Guys force was also divided into three groups to be commanded. The first group consisted of a Ton-Falk Escort Carrier, nine Dominion Attack Ships, Tie Fighters, Tie Interceptors, and Tie Bombers. The second group consisted of a single Dominion Battlecruiser. The third group consisted of a lonesome, but powerful, Dreadnought Cruiser.
As the scenario began the two sides squared off with little deviation from their initial heading. This would quickly change as the Good Guys realized the power of the Dreadnought opposing them on the right flank. Thankfully they also soon realized that the Dreadnought was slow and ponderous. On the opposite flank the three Good Guy ships mowed through the Dominion Attack Ships and were soon firing on the escort carrier. This enormous box in space would spend the rest of the game shoving Tie Fighters out the hanger door as fast as it could.
Within a couple of turns the center of action appeared to be on the Good Guy's right flank. The Dominion Battlecruiser had moved itself out of the fight after having its forward shields dropped and its hull penetrated by a combination of phaser, turbolaser, and photon torpedo fire. The Nebula Cruiser had two of its shield arcs pounded into submission and noticable turbolaser scars along its saucer section. In return the Dreadnought's shields had barely flickered. A snap tactical FTL jump by the Nebula brought it out of harm's way and the Dreadnought switched its attention to the Neutron Star Cruiser.
At this point the Nebula, which had jumped into the gravity well of the gas giant, used the gravitational pull, along with a little over powering of its thrusters, to swing around and bring its sizeable torpedo armament to bear on the Dreadnought's rear. A few die rolls later and the majority of the torpedoes struck home on the Dreadnought's engine section. The Dreadnought's captain now looked at his ship as it struggled to maintain orbit of the planet with scoring across the hull of all sections and shield damage in all but one arc. Opposite him the Neutron Star's captain was a little shaky after the pounding he had taken distracting the Dreadnought while the Nebula pulled its maneuver. On the other side of the planet the Excelsior's commander was riding high as he had cleared all but the escort carrier from the left flank. The escort carrier's captain was seriously considering pulling the hyperspace lever as he watched his Tie Fighters drop like gnats.
At this point the Good Guys handed the victory to the Bad Guys but with the caveat that it was a close game. Everyone had fun and more than a few laughs and tense moments. Many people stopped by the game to take pictures and ask questions. Hopefully we will see some of you at the next event we attend.
